Artists’ Union England (AUE) formally launched 1st May 2014 and became a fully certified trade union on 3rd June 2016. AUE represents visual, applied, and socially engaged artists independently and democratically, at strategic decision-making negotiations with government and others to gain fair pay and better working conditions.

Dear Member,

WELCOME TO AUE.

Thank you for joining AUE, England’s only trade union for visual, applied, and socially engaged artists.

Your membership number can be found in your Membership Confirmation Email. You will shortly receive an email confirming your PPL insurance cover and policy documents. Please note that your PPL insurance cover is dependent on you having an active AUE membership. Email us to check your membership status or for insurance queries.

Every one of our members has their own reason for joining and we want to hear yours. Periodically the Executive Committee will solicit information in the form of a survey, but in the meantime we want to hear your suggestions and concerns. Every member is also entitled to many benefits, listed below.

You can contact us at any time at info@artistsunionengland.org.uk. All of us on your Executive Committee volunteer our time so your email will be seen and we will respond as soon as possible.

AUE has been very active in our short life. As a member you can become familiar with your union and some of the important work we’ve done. Click on the following titles to be taken to our website:

As an AUE member, your benefits include:

  • Public and Products Liability (PPL) insurance up to £5m tailored especially for artists
  • 30 minutes FREE legal advice from trade union and employment rights specialists, Morrish Solicitors, as well as a range of discounts and benefits for AUE members and their families
  • Access to a shared knowledge base around artists’ issues, including Welfare Benefits, studio rights, Rates of Pay and challenging discrimination.
  • FREE training and study opportunities through the TUC (Trades Union Congress) and GFTU (General Federation of Trade Unions)
  • Coming soon: tax guidance

As an AUE member you have the opportunity to:

  • Link up with like-minded AUE members
  • Follow us on Twitter and on Facebook
  • Campaign with your fellow artists to help improve pay and conditions for artists, sometimes alongside your other cultural trade union colleagues

Our growing membership means we are better able to advocate and campaign for an improvement to artists’ working lives. Working in conjunction with our sister trade unions, Artists’ Union England is making sure artists’ voices are heard, and increasing awareness of the active and vital role artists play in our society. We are in constant contact with politicians and employers about artists’ rights regarding fair pay, non-discriminatory practices and better working conditions.

Strength in numbers

In Solidarity
